For as long as I can remember, I have loved books. My memory carries me as far back as my childhood moments with my great grandmother, Melvina “Mama” Marshall, who told me folktales about Brer Bookie and Brer Rabbit when I visited her after coming from primary school.
Once I hit high school, I began writing poems. Poetry provided the outlet that I needed as a teenager facing many challenges. I had the privilege of having a poem published in a local newspaper and became an active member of a youth group that performed spoken word at public functions.
From The Hardy Boys to Nancy Drew, to Kaffir Boy and beyond, Language and Literature were to become a part of my future! As I delved into the theme of identity, or wrote essays on books about gender equality and social issues in college, I decided to pursue the Arts as an educator, teaching high school students for many years.
Of course, life has its twists and turns, and so did mine. I became a wife and a mother of three boys and stopped writing completely! As an educator of more than 17 years, I have had the rewarding opportunity to work with students with special needs. Now, my love for writing has returned and I have come full circle!
